It's a very confusing memory, starting with the whistle. He's out through the gate with a jockey on his back, muttering under his breath things like "Gonna beat you motherfuckers gonna beat you beat you can't catch me I'm the gingerbread fucking horse" as he runs. Some of the other horses are normal but enchanted. Some are other kinds of fairy steeds or hell horses. But despite knowing the odds are against him, he somehow pulls ahead, seafoam sweat coming off him, and crosses the line first. As he jogs it off, his jockey swings off him and throws his arms around Star's equine neck.

[01] Dandelion came through while he was sobbing. offered to take him with him.
The memory doesn't have context for his grief, but he is sitting on a stone in a lake, half-hidden under a waterfall, wailing like his heart is breaking.
A few minutes later, he hears guitar music (by this, I mean baroque guitar) and is so startled by it he stops crying and sticks his head out to see what's happening. The guitarist is a slender daoine sidhe: fingers too long, fluffy hair glowing from the inside, features too narrow, but with an affable face despite that. Something about him looks tired.
"Why do you weep, little nixe?"
Star (though this isn't his name them) steps out and makes a dick joke. He's no little nixe. Why, he'd challenge a horse.
Not an answer, the sidhe says, and he is one of the shining nobles, so star says that he lost someone he had hoped to keep, and he has come to know that he cannot ride with his herd any longer and stay himself. So he has to decide what next to lose, himself or the herd.
"You cannot lose yourself and keep anything," the sidhe says, and stops playing. "Do you sing?"
All nixe sing. He must know that. Star (who isn't star) says as much.
"Then come with me. We can be two stray spirits with no host," says the sidhe, as if he's a commoner.
"And you will bind me to you?"
"No, no more bindings. You stay as long as your feet walk beside me of your own will, and no longer."
It's not like he has a better offer. He wipes his wet face on a wet arm and says, "Then show me the direction my feet will go."
